Valimaki Wins First PGA Tour Title in Thrilling RSM Classic Season Finale

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — History was made at the RSM Classic! Sami Valimaki etched his name into the record books, becoming Finland’s first-ever PGA Tour champion. Valimaki closed with a stellar 4-under 66, clinching a nail-biting one-shot victory at Sea Island in what was a dramatic and pivotal final event of the year.

Valimaki’s Clutch Performance Seals the Deal

Valimaki, hungry for a win after two runner-up finishes in recent seasons, demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure. A crucial putt from below the green on the 16th, followed by an impressive 18-foot putt, showcased his skill. He remained steady even as the wind conditions shifted dramatically late in the day, proving his mettle as a true champion.

“It has been a long road, of course,” Valimaki said. “I feel like it’s a really tough year even when I kind of played decent golf, and then to keep pushing and find some good grooves in the last few tournaments, it feels amazing.”

RSM Classic Delivers FedEx Cup Drama

While Valimaki celebrated his victory, the RSM Classic also served as a pressure cooker for players battling to secure their PGA Tour cards and improve their FedEx Cup standings. The stakes were incredibly high, with the top 100 players (down from 125 in previous years) earning full PGA Tour cards for the upcoming 2026 season, promising smaller and more competitive fields.

Ricky Castillo’s Remarkable Round Comes Up Short

Ricky Castillo ignited the course with a blistering 28 on the front nine and a final-round 62. For a brief moment, it appeared his performance would propel him from No. 135 into the coveted top 100. However, the drama was far from over.

McGreevy’s Clutch Birdie Shifts the Landscape

Max McGreevy, playing with a sense of freedom, drained a sensational 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole, posting a 63 and securing solo second place. This clutch performance shifted the FedEx Cup standings, bumping Castillo down to No. 102 by a mere handful of points.

Hodges Narrowly Misses Top 100

Adding to the tension, Lee Hodges narrowly missed a 10-foot birdie attempt, a miss that ultimately cost him a place in the top 100. His final-round par of 66 left him agonizingly close at No. 101 in the FedEx Cup standings, separated by approximately two points.

Signature Events Beckon for Valimaki and McGreevy

Valimaki’s victory not only secures him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour but also guarantees him a spot in the first two $20 million signature events of 2026, thanks to finishing at No. 51 in the FedEx Cup. McGreevy, already secure with his tour card, surged to No. 60, also qualifying for the prestigious signature events. This move bumped Jordan Spieth, who sat out the fall season, from the 60th spot, requiring him to seek sponsor exemptions for Pebble Beach and Riviera.

Echavarria and Stevens Make Moves

Nico Echavarria’s strong 65 resulted in a tie for fourth, propelling him into the No. 51-60 range, securing his place in the signature events on the West Coast. Sam Stevens, who carded an impressive hole-in-one on the third hole with a precise 9-iron, finished with a 63 and joined an 11-way tie for seventh. Already positioned for all signature events, Stevens is now focused on maintaining his top 50 world ranking to earn an invite to the Masters.

The Race for the Masters Continues

The battle for a spot in the Masters remains incredibly tight, with Johnny Keefer, the Korn Ferry Tour player of the year, entering the week at No. 50. Both Keefer and Stevens, part of the large tie for seventh, are poised to move up in the rankings, but tournaments in Australia and South Africa still remain, leaving their fate uncertain. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds!
