Utah 6A/5A Softball Super Regionals: Thursday’s Game 1 Recaps and Analysis

The opening day of the 6A and 5A Super Regionals delivered a series of statement wins, dramatic comebacks, and a few shocking upsets. Thursday’s action set the tone for the best-of-three series, with top seeds flexing their muscles and underdogs proving they can hang. From Riverton’s offensive explosion to Skyridge’s late-inning heroics, here is everything you need to know from the first round of the Super Regionals.

Contents
  • Top Seeds Dominate: Riverton, Herriman, and Lehi Roll
  • Bingham Survives Cedar Valley’s Late Rally in a Slugfest
  • Skyridge Stuns Westlake with a Comeback for the Ages
  • Predictions for Game 2: What to Watch For
  • Strong Conclusion: The Road to the State Title Heats Up

Top Seeds Dominate: Riverton, Herriman, and Lehi Roll

The No. 1 overall seed Riverton Silverwolves left no doubt in their 14-0 rout of No. 16 Layton. The Silverwolves wasted no time, plating two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second before breaking the game wide open. A five-run third inning followed by a six-run fourth ended the contest early via the mercy rule.

Leading the charge was sophomore Zoe Hazlett, who went 1-for-3 with a towering home run and four RBIs. Hazlett’s blast in the third inning was the dagger that silenced any hopes of a Layton rally. Riverton’s pitching staff combined for a one-hit shutout, striking out seven batters. The Silverwolves will look to close out the series in Game 2 on Friday.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Herriman Mustangs showed why they are a championship favorite, scoring in every inning en route to a 15-0 victory over No. 15 Weber. The Mustangs’ offense was relentless, but the story of the game was Ashlyn Beratto in the circle. Beratto recorded nine strikeouts while allowing just one hit, completely neutralizing the Weber lineup.

Offensively, Jaylee Hansen was a force, going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs. Aspyn Hawes also shined, matching Hansen’s 2-for-4 effort while driving in three runs. Herriman’s ability to produce runs in every inning speaks to their depth and discipline at the plate. Game 2 is set for Friday, and the Mustangs will look to carry this momentum forward.

No. 3 Lehi Pioneers also made quick work of their opponent, defeating No. 14 Lone Peak 15-0 in a game that was never in doubt. Lehi exploded for four runs in the first inning and seven more in the second, effectively ending the contest before Lone Peak could find any rhythm.

Jaxie Medler earned the win in the circle, striking out six batters while allowing just two hits. Medler’s command was sharp, and she kept Lone Peak’s hitters off balance all game. The Pioneers’ defense was flawless, committing zero errors while forcing Lone Peak into three miscues. Lehi’s offensive depth was on full display, with multiple players contributing to the 15-run outburst. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday, and the Pioneers will aim for a sweep.

Bingham Survives Cedar Valley’s Late Rally in a Slugfest

In the most thrilling game of the day, No. 8 Bingham Miners outlasted No. 9 Cedar Valley 17-11 in a back-and-forth offensive showcase. Bingham jumped out to an early lead, but Cedar Valley refused to go quietly, scoring four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to make it a one-score game.

Bingham’s Lily Gritton was the difference-maker. At the plate, Gritton went 1-for-4 with a key hit, and in the circle, she pitched the win, recording four strikeouts. While her stat line wasn’t flashy, Gritton’s ability to work out of jams in the middle innings kept Bingham in control. The Miners’ offense provided ample support, with multiple players reaching base and scoring.

Cedar Valley’s rally was fueled by timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, but Bingham’s early lead proved too steep to overcome. The Miners’ defense held firm in the final inning, sealing the 17-11 victory. Game 2 of this series is on Friday, and Cedar Valley will need to find a way to slow down Bingham’s bats if they hope to force a decisive Game 3.

Expert Analysis: This series is far from over. Cedar Valley showed they can score in bunches, and if their pitching stabilizes, they could steal Game 2. Bingham, however, has the offensive firepower to win a shootout. Expect another high-scoring affair on Friday.

Skyridge Stuns Westlake with a Comeback for the Ages

In what was arguably the most dramatic game of the day, No. 10 Skyridge Falcons rallied from a four-run deficit to stun No. 7 Westlake 11-8. The Falcons trailed 4-0 after two innings, but a five-run third inning and a three-run fourth inning flipped the script entirely.

Eden Rose was the offensive catalyst for Skyridge, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Her timely hits in the third and fourth innings sparked the rally and gave the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish. Callie Baker also contributed with a hit and an RBI, providing steady production in the middle of the lineup.

Westlake’s power was on display early, with Devi Tuivai and Audrey Sherman each launching solo home runs. However, the Thunder were undone by their own mistakes. Westlake committed four errors, which directly led to five unearned runs for Skyridge. The Falcons, despite committing two errors of their own, capitalized on every Westlake miscue.

Expert Analysis: This was a classic case of a team beating itself. Westlake has the talent to win this series, but they must clean up their defense. Skyridge showed incredible resilience and will carry significant momentum into Game 2. If Westlake can limit errors, they have the bats to even the series. Game 2 is on Friday, and expect a tighter, lower-scoring affair.

Predictions for Game 2: What to Watch For

As we look ahead to Friday’s Game 2 matchups, several key trends will determine who advances and who goes home.

  • Riverton vs. Layton: The Silverwolves are playing with supreme confidence. Look for them to close out the series early. Prediction: Riverton wins 10-0.
  • Herriman vs. Weber: Herriman’s pitching depth is a major advantage. If Beratto is again in the circle, Weber will struggle to score. Prediction: Herriman wins 12-2.
  • Lehi vs. Lone Peak: Lone Peak must find a way to generate offense. Lehi’s Medler will be tough to beat twice. Prediction: Lehi wins 8-1.
  • Bingham vs. Cedar Valley: This is the most unpredictable series. Cedar Valley’s late-game grit makes them dangerous. Prediction: Bingham wins 9-7 in a close one.
  • Skyridge vs. Westlake: Westlake will be motivated to bounce back. Expect a defensive battle. Prediction: Westlake wins 6-4 to force a Game 3.

Strong Conclusion: The Road to the State Title Heats Up

Thursday’s Game 1 results have set the stage for a thrilling Friday of Super Regional action. Top seeds Riverton, Herriman, and Lehi have shown they are ready to dominate, but the resilience of teams like Skyridge and the firepower of Cedar Valley prove that anything can happen in the postseason. The margin for error is razor-thin, and every pitch, every error, and every clutch hit will be magnified.

For the teams that won, the focus is on finishing the job and avoiding a winner-take-all Game 3. For those that lost, it’s about making adjustments, tightening up defense, and finding a way to extend their season. One thing is certain: the 6A and 5A softball playoffs are delivering unforgettable moments, and we haven’t seen anything yet. Stay tuned for Friday’s Game 2 recaps as the road to the state championship continues.
