Running Back Depth is Crucial: Wilson’s Performance Highlights the Importance of Insurance

By Tristan H. Cockcroft

Emanuel Wilson’s sensational 26.5 fantasy points this past weekend, a career-high achieved in his first NFL start as he filled in for the injured Josh Jacobs (knee), served as a powerful reminder of a critical fantasy football strategy: Always secure insurance for your top running backs! Especially as we head into crucial weeks and the playoffs.

Wilson’s explosive performance isn’t an isolated incident. Before him, Sean Tucker (34.0 fantasy points in Week 11) and Kyle Monangai (22.8 fantasy points in Week 9) stepped up as fill-in starters and delivered significant fantasy scores. And remember TreVeyon Henderson (73.0 points between Weeks 9-11), who ultimately seized the starting role after initially filling in for Rhamondre Stevenson.

While it’s premature to suggest that Wilson has permanently replaced Jacobs in Green Bay, his strong performance on Sunday certainly gives the Packers the luxury of being more patient in reintroducing their veteran running back, especially considering the short week ahead as they prepare for their Thanksgiving Day clash against the Detroit Lions. Wilson’s impressive stats, including 107 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 30 rushing yards over expected (per Next Gen Stats), and four explosive runs, either matched or surpassed Jacobs’ best single-game numbers from earlier in the season. His five missed tackles forced were also comparable to Jacobs’ best efforts.

Keep Wilson on your radar in your fantasy league. There’s a solid chance we’ll see more of him during that Thanksgiving Day divisional game, although it’s a challenging matchup and he’d only be a worthy start if the backfield is solely his.

With the fantasy playoffs just around the corner (starting in Week 14 for ESPN standard leagues), insuring your key players is no longer a suggestion – it’s practically mandatory, assuming you have the bench space. Wilson, Tucker, and Monangai remain essential stashes. It’s also prudent to roster key backups like Tank Bigsby (Saquon Barkley’s backup), Tyler Allgeier (Bijan Robinson), Ray Davis (James Cook III), Blake Corum (Kyren Williams), Brian Robinson Jr. (Christian McCaffrey), and Ollie Gordon II (De’Von Achane), if available and if you roster their corresponding starters.

Fantasy Football Takeaways: Key Observations from Sunday’s Games

Monangai’s Ascendancy in Chicago

Monangai’s Week 12 performance suggested more than just an insurance policy role; it had the feel of a backfield takeover. He out-snapped D’Andre Swift (56% to 43%), out-carried him (12 to 8), and had more total touches (12 to 9). Monangai also recorded six runs of at least 5 yards, while Swift never exceeded 4 yards on a single carry. The rookie has looked like the more explosive back recently. This development transforms the Chicago Bears’ backfield into a frustrating committee. While not ideal with matchups against the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers looming, it signals that Monangai could soon earn a workload that elevates him to weekly fantasy RB2 status.

Lamar Jackson’s Recent Struggles

Lamar Jackson has now finished with under 10 fantasy points for the second consecutive week, scoring just 7.22 against the Jets (a better matchup on paper than the Browns the previous week where he scored 4.72 points). This marks the first time since becoming the starter in 2018 that he’s fallen below that threshold in consecutive games. Jackson appears hesitant on running plays, averaging a sluggish 9.3 mph on 11 attempts over the past two weeks (compared to 13.6 mph in his first six games), potentially indicating the lingering effects of his ankle issue. A healthy Jackson can single-handedly win you weeks, but his current form is concerning. Fortunately, a favorable matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals is next, where he’ll need a significant bounce-back performance to restore fantasy managers’ faith heading into the playoffs.

Giants-Lions Overtime Thriller: A Fantasy Goldmine

Fantasy managers love high-scoring overtime games, and the New York Giants-Detroit Lions contest certainly delivered. Four of the top five scoring performances of the week came from that game. Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs exploded for 55.4 fantasy points, tied for the 12th-best performance of all time for a running back and tied for 22nd among all positions. Gibbs dominated the Giants’ defense for 145 more rushing yards than expected, four explosive runs, and two runs clocked at over 20 mph. This game highlighted the Giants’ struggles against the run and the Lions’ vulnerabilities against the pass – valuable insights to keep in mind for the upcoming fantasy playoffs. The Lions face Jordan Love, Dak Prescott, and Matthew Stafford over the next three weeks, while TreVeyon Henderson faces the Giants next week before New York’s bye.

Week 12 Top Fantasy Performers (Through 1 PM ET Games):

  1. Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Lions — 55.40 fantasy points
  2. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Seahawks — 37.10
  3. Jameis Winston, QB, Giants — 32.24
  4. Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Giants — 30.60
  5. Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, Lions — 29.90
  6. Emanuel Wilson, RB, Packers — 26.50
  7. Hunter Henry, TE, Patriots — 24.50
  8. Rashee Rice, WR, Chiefs — 24.10
  9. Cam Ward, QB, Titans — 23.94
  10. DJ Moore, WR, Bears — 23.40

Joe Burrow’s Recovery: Will He Return for Thanksgiving?

By Stephania Bell

Burrow (turf toe) will remain on IR for Week 12 despite participating in back-to-back full practices, due to the quick turnaround between games. A Thanksgiving Day game against Baltimore made it difficult to get him ready for a Sunday game and then turn around for Thursday.

Roster Moves: Bills and Texans Players to Watch

By Eric Moody

  • Khalil Shakir (Bills): Shakir is the only Bills receiver worth rostering, averaging 6.4 targets and 11.5 fantasy points per game.
  • Ty Johnson (Bills): Ty Johnson is the insurance back to roster.
  • Jayden Higgins (Texans): Higgins should be rostered in more leagues.
  • Woody Marks (Texans): Marks is the clear No. 1 in the Texans backfield.

Henderson’s Value Amidst Stevenson’s Return

By Tristan H. Cockcroft

With Rhamondre Stevenson nearing a return, TreVeyon Henderson’s fantasy managers can’t be happy. Don’t sell too low on Henderson due to Stevenson’s return. Henderson has a favorable schedule for RBs even including the bye week
