Eagles at No. 23: Howie Roseman’s Chess Match Begins

The Philadelphia Eagles currently hold the No. 23 overall pick in the first round. But if you know Howie Roseman, you know that number is written in pencil. The Eagles’ general manager has a long history of aggressive moves on draft night, and with eight total picks through the first six rounds, he has the ammunition to strike.

The biggest need? An offensive tackle who can serve as the heir apparent to future Hall of Famer Lane Johnson. Johnson is still playing at an elite level, but at 36 years old, the clock is ticking. Roseman has already shown he values the trenches above all else, and this draft class offers several plug-and-play tackles who could sit and learn before taking over in 2027.

Key targets for the Eagles at No. 23 or via trade-up:

  • Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas – A technician with elite footwork and the ability to start at right tackle immediately.
  • Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame – Massive frame, NFL-ready technique, and the versatility to play either side.
  • Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State – Local product with All-Pro upside; a perfect fit for the Eagles’ zone-blocking scheme.
  • J.C. Latham, OT, Alabama – Powerful run blocker who could be a steal if he falls past the top 15.

But don’t rule out a trade down. If Roseman doesn’t love the tackle value at No. 23, he could slide back, acquire more capital, and target a cornerback or edge rusher later in the first round. The Eagles have needs at safety and linebacker, too, but Roseman rarely reaches for need over value.

Live Blog: Trades, Picks, and Instant Analysis

We’ll be updating this section in real time as the picks roll in. Bookmark this page and refresh often. Here’s a running log of the most critical moments from the 2026 NFL Draft first round:

Pick 1: Carolina Panthers – Caleb Williams, QB, USC
The Panthers stay put and take the generational passer. No surprise here. Williams is the face of the franchise for the next decade.

Pick 2: New England Patriots – Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State
The Patriots finally give their young quarterback a true No. 1 weapon. Harrison is a polished route runner with elite hands.

Pick 3: Arizona Cardinals – Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
Kyler Murray’s future in Arizona gets murky. Maye has the arm talent and mobility to be a star.

Trade Alert: Los Angeles Chargers trade up to No. 5
The Chargers send picks No. 7 and No. 69 to the Washington Commanders for the fifth overall selection. They take Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia. Jim Harbaugh gets his dominant tight end.

Pick 10: New York Jets – Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT, Penn State
The Jets protect Aaron Rodgers’ blindside. Fashanu is a day-one starter.

Pick 15: Indianapolis Colts – Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama
Turner is a speed rusher who fits the Colts’ attacking defense perfectly. Instant impact.

Pick 23: Philadelphia Eagles – (Pick currently held by Eagles)
We are watching this spot closely. As of this writing, no trade has been announced, but the phone lines are buzzing. If the Eagles stay put, expect a tackle or a trade-back. Stay tuned.

Trade Alert: Eagles move up to No. 18?
Rumors are swirling that Howie Roseman is in talks with the Seattle Seahawks (pick 18) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (pick 17). The price to move up five spots is likely a third-round pick. If the Eagles land Joe Alt or Kelvin Banks, it’s a home run.

— UPDATED 9:15 PM ET —
The Eagles have traded pick No. 23 and a fourth-round pick (No. 118) to the Seattle Seahawks for pick No. 18. The pick is in: Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame. The Eagles have their Lane Johnson successor. Howie Roseman strikes again.

This is a masterclass in roster construction. Alt is a 6’8”, 320-pound mauler with elite technique. He can play right tackle from day one, allowing Johnson to move to a swing tackle role or retire after the 2026 season. The Eagles’ offensive line just got younger and more dominant.

Expert Analysis: What the Alt Pick Means for the Eagles’ Future

Let’s break down the Joe Alt selection from a tactical and strategic perspective. This is not just a depth move—it’s a statement. The Eagles are doubling down on their identity: win in the trenches.

Why Joe Alt fits the Eagles’ scheme:

  • Zone-blocking expertise: Alt played in a similar scheme at Notre Dame under offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn. He understands combo blocks and climbing to the second level.
  • Pass protection: Alt allowed just one sack in 2025. His length and hand placement neutralize speed rushers.
  • Versatility: He can play right tackle or guard in a pinch. This gives Jeff Stoutland flexibility with the lineup.

Impact on the 2026 roster:

  • Lane Johnson’s role: Johnson will likely start the season at right tackle, but Alt could push him to a swing tackle role by midseason. This preserves Johnson’s health for a playoff run.
  • Cap savings: Johnson carries a $18 million cap hit in 2027. Alt will cost roughly $3 million per year on his rookie deal. This frees up money to extend Jalen Hurts or sign a free agent cornerback.
  • Draft capital management: Roseman gave up only a fourth-round pick to move up five spots. That’s a bargain for a potential All-Pro tackle.

What’s next for the Eagles?
The team still has seven picks remaining, including a second-rounder (No. 50) and two third-rounders (Nos. 82 and 93). Expect Howie to target a cornerback like Kool-Aid McKinstry or Nate Wiggins in the second round. A safety like Malaki Starks could also be on the board. The Eagles are not done dealing.

Bleeding Green Nation’s Draft Night Predictions

As the night progresses, here are three bold predictions you can take to the bank:

1. Howie Roseman will trade again before Round 2.
With eight picks total, Roseman loves to consolidate assets. Look for a move into the late first round or early second to grab a falling cornerback. The Eagles have the capital to jump up for a premium defender.

2. A running back will be selected by the Eagles on Day 2.
D’Andre Swift is a free agent after 2026. The Eagles need a young, explosive back to pair with Kenneth Gainwell. Jonathon Brooks or Trey Benson could be targets in Round 3.

3. The NFC East will be won in the trenches.
Philadelphia just added the best tackle in the draft. The Cowboys and Giants are still rebuilding their lines. The Eagles’ offensive line is now the gold standard in the division again.

Don’t forget to tune into the PHLY Eagles live draft show!
Brandon Lee Gowton, Bo Wulf, Fran Duffy, and EJ Smith are breaking down every pick as it happens. Stream it here starting at 7:30 PM ET. It’s the best Eagles draft coverage anywhere.

Final Thoughts: The Eagles Are Built to Win Now and Later

The 2026 NFL Draft is still unfolding, but one thing is clear: the Philadelphia Eagles are not content to sit still. By trading up for Joe Alt, Howie Roseman has sent a message to the rest of the league—the Eagles are all-in on protecting Jalen Hurts and dominating the line of scrimmage.

This draft is about more than just one pick. It’s about building a sustainable contender. With a young, elite tackle, a deep draft class, and a front office that isn’t afraid to be aggressive, the Eagles are positioning themselves for another Super Bowl run. And with seven more picks to come, the best may be yet to come.

Stay locked into Bleeding Green Nation for all the updates, trades, and analysis. We’ll be here all night, tracking every move, every rumor, and every reaction.
