Kentucky Derby 2026 odds and picks: Betting lines, favorites, expert prediction, post positions

The countdown is nearly over. The 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 2, 2026, with a post time of 6:57 p.m. ET at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This race marks the start of the Triple Crown season and represents the single biggest betting day in all of horse racing. With a full gate of 20 three-year-olds ready to charge down the storied stretch, the question on every bettor’s mind is simple: Who wins the Run for the Roses?

  • Conclusion: The 152nd Kentucky Derby is wide open

This year’s field is packed with talent, but two horses have emerged as co-favorites at 5-1 odds: Renegade and The Puma. Renegade originally opened as the 4-1 morning-line favorite after drawing the dreaded No. 1 post, but The Puma’s surge in late wagering has created a fascinating dynamic. To help you navigate the chaos, Yahoo Sports spoke with two seasoned horse racing handicappers — Lane Gold, host of Kentucky’s Winners Circle, and Peter Fornatale, creator of In the Money Media Network. Their insights on the favorites, long shots, and wagering strategies are essential for anyone looking to cash a ticket Saturday.

Kentucky Derby 2026 post positions and morning-line odds

The post position draw is one of the most critical moments leading up to the Derby. A bad draw can doom a horse before the starting bell rings. Here is a quick look at the key contenders and their post positions:

  • Renegade (5-1) — Post 1. Trained by Todd Pletcher. Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.
  • The Puma (5-1) — Post 8. Trained by Brad Cox. Jockey: Flavien Prat.
  • Midnight Mirage (8-1) — Post 15. Trained by Bob Baffert. Jockey: John Velazquez.
  • Commandment (10-1) — Post 3. Trained by Steve Asmussen. Jockey: Joel Rosario.
  • Silver Storm (12-1) — Post 12. Trained by Chad Brown. Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione.
  • Coastal King (15-1) — Post 20. Trained by Kenny McPeek. Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr.

Odds are subject to change leading up to post time. Keep checking the most recent Kentucky Derby odds as late money can dramatically shift the board.

Renegade: The favorite with a mountain to climb

Renegade enters the Derby as the most talked-about horse in the field. He won the Arkansas Derby impressively, and he retains the services of superstar jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who chose Renegade over Commandment. But despite his talent, the handicappers have serious concerns.

Lane Gold is cautious. “He checks a lot of boxes because he’s won the big prep race in the Arkansas Derby. Keeps Irad Ortiz Jr. as a jockey, who gave up riding Commandment after two races, but what’s working against Renegade are two obvious things. First, starting from Post 1 has been a death knell — no one has won from there since 1986. Second, he’s got some quarter cracks in his feet and is wearing some special shoes. It didn’t affect him in Arkansas Derby, but this is a different race. I’d be concerned about the rail and those special shoes to soften the blow of those maladies he has, which Todd Pletcher has been pretty open about. Have to be on your game in the Derby. He’s not a speed horse, so rail won’t kill him, but how wide will he have to go in order to potentially make a run? Lot to like, but not at the price.”

Peter Fornatale echoes the concern. “For the last couple weeks, it looked like Renegade was going to be a sizable favorite, but he drew the rail, which is, shall we say, less than ideal in a 20-horse field. There’s also been some discussion from the guy who does the private workout reports for us that he hasn’t been working best in the mornings heading into this race.”

The bottom line on Renegade: He has the talent to win, but the post position, foot issues, and workout concerns make him a risky bet at short odds. If you like him, consider using him in exotics rather than a win wager.

The Puma: The late-charging co-favorite

The Puma has been the talk of the week, surging from off the pace in the betting lines to share favoritism with Renegade. Trained by the ever-dangerous Brad Cox, this colt has a devastating closing kick that could be perfectly suited for the Derby’s demanding 1 ¼ miles.

Gold sees The Puma as a legitimate threat. “The Puma has the kind of running style that wins the Kentucky Derby. He sits just off the pace and pounces late. His Blue Grass Stakes win was visually impressive, and he’s handled the Churchill Downs surface well in training. The only question is whether he can avoid traffic trouble from post 8. If he gets a clean trip, he’s the one they have to catch.”

Fornatale adds, “The Puma is the kind of horse who could be 10 lengths back at the half-mile and still win. He’s got the pedigree and the turn of foot. I think he’s the most likely winner if the race sets up for closers, which it often does.”

With Flavien Prat aboard, a jockey known for masterful rides in big races, The Puma offers a compelling win bet at 5-1. He is the expert pick to beat Renegade.

Long shots and value picks to consider

The Derby is famous for producing massive payouts. While the favorites are strong, a few long shots could hit the board or even pull off the upset. Here are three horses to watch at double-digit odds:

  • Coastal King (15-1, Post 20): Trained by Kenny McPeek, who won the Derby in 2024 with Mystik Dan. Coastal King has a huge closing kick and benefits from a wide post that allows him to avoid early traffic. He could be the “bomb” that shocks the world.
  • Silver Storm (12-1, Post 12): Chad Brown’s colt is consistent and has a strong late pace. He’s never been worse than second in four starts. At 12-1, he offers excellent value for exactas and trifectas.
  • Midnight Mirage (8-1, Post 15): Bob Baffert’s horse is the class of the field on paper. Despite Baffert’s recent Derby history, Midnight Mirage has the speed figures to compete. He’s a legitimate win candidate if he gets a clean trip from the outside.

Expert prediction and wagering strategy for the 2026 Kentucky Derby

After analyzing the odds, post positions, and expert opinions, here is a clear betting strategy for Saturday’s race.

Win bet: The Puma (5-1) is the most reliable win candidate. He has the running style, trainer, and jockey to get the job done. Renegade is too risky at the price, but The Puma offers fair value.

Exacta box: The Puma, Midnight Mirage, and Coastal King. This combination covers the likely winner, a Baffert contender, and a bomb long shot. A $2 exacta box costs $12.

Trifecta key: The Puma over Renegade, Midnight Mirage, Silver Storm, and Coastal King. This bet requires The Puma to win, with the other three horses finishing second and third in any order. It offers a high potential payout.

Superfecta long shot play: Add Commandment and a 50-1 shot like Thunder Road (Post 18) to the bottom of your ticket. The Derby superfecta often pays five figures, and including a long shot can turn a small bet into a life-changing score.

Lane Gold’s final word: “I’ll be playing against Renegade. The rail and the feet are too much to overcome at 5-1. I’m looking at The Puma to win, with Midnight Mirage and Coastal King underneath. Don’t be afraid to spread deep in the exotics — this is a wide-open race.”

Peter Fornatale’s final word: “The Puma is my pick to win. He’s the most talented horse in the field, and his post position is workable. I’ll be backing him to win and using him on top of my trifecta tickets. Good luck, and may the best horse win.”

Conclusion: The 152nd Kentucky Derby is wide open

The 2026 Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be a classic. Renegade brings the résumé but carries heavy baggage. The Puma brings the closing kick and the momentum. And a host of long shots — led by Coastal King and Midnight Mirage — are ready to crash the party.

As the horses load into the gate at 6:57 p.m. ET on Saturday, the betting public will have one final chance to make their move. Whether you are a seasoned handicapper or a casual fan, remember the golden rule of the Derby: Expect the unexpected. The Run for the Roses has a way of breaking hearts and making dreams. Choose your horses wisely, bet responsibly, and enjoy the most exciting two minutes in sports.

Final expert pick: The Puma to win. Exacta box: The Puma, Midnight Mirage, Coastal King. Trifecta key: The Puma over Renegade, Midnight Mirage, Silver Storm, and Coastal King.
